12:30-1:20pm: - Kansas Criminal Law Update
Speakers: Jacob Gontesky and Shawn Minihan, Johnson County District Attorney’s Office.  

Session DetailsThis session will provide a general overview of updates in Kansas Criminal Law July 1, 2016 – July 1, 2017, including: 

  1. Waiver of right to jury trial (particularly, in the context of diversions)
  2. The DUI Refusal Statute (K.S.A. 8-1025 & Ryce & Nece)
  3. Apart from a case law update: brief discussion of 1507 Motions – Making a record at the trial level


1:30-2:20pm:- 
Practices and Policies of the Johnson County DA's Office

Speakers: Jonathan Zadina and Will Hurst, Johnson County District Attorney’s Office. 

Session Details:  This session will focus on two of the most important areas of the DA’s work:

1. Expungements
2. Diversion Program

Attendees will take away from this session an in-depth understanding to the policies and procedures surrounding these two areas, as well an appreciation for the challenges both expungements and the division program place on the DA’s office. 

2:30-4:20pm: Pitfalls of Practicing Law Out of a Lincoln Town Car  (A 10-minute break will be taken from 3:20-3:30pm)

Speakers: Stanton A. Hazlett, Kansas Disciplinary Administrator, and Penny R. Moylan, Deputy Disciplinary Administrator

Session Details

Identifying, discussing, and resolving the many ethics dilemmas presented in the movie The Lincoln Lawyer by viewing film clips from the movie and referencing the Kansas Rules of Professional Conduct (KRPC).

The attendee can expect to confront and resolve common and uncommon ethics issues raised in the film, and learn to apply the KRPC to real-life ethics problems.
