Family Law Summit 2019

Cost: $150 includes breakfast, lunch, refreshments and campus parking pass. 

This CLE program follows on from the Family Law Summit, held in 2018. The sessions will reflect the discussions from that Summit, and presenters will lead small discussion groups to identify additional ideas to make improvement in the relevant practices.

Multi-Jurisdictional Practice Problems - to increase cross border communication, to increase cooperation, to make cross border practice more efficient for practitioners, and to better serve families. Presenters: Tiffany McFarland, Kimberly Scheuerman, Sandy Norris and Judges Howell and Mahoney.

Unrepresented Litigants - increase access to justice for all; to assist the bench and bar better deal with issues arising when one or both parties are unrepresented; ways for lawyers to provide services to those who might not otherwise be able to afford counsel. Presenters: Ann Colgan, Stephanie Schutt, Denise Lebaron-Ramos and Judge Lynch and Long.

Alternative Dispute Resolution - increase access to ADR, the evolving nature of ADR, the increased use of technology in ADR practice, and ways to encourage the public, the bench and the bar to make better use of ADR services. Presenters: Kay McCarthy, Shannon Sorenson, Jacquelyn Bernhardt and Judges Kimminau and Pokorny.

Discovery/Process and Attorney Fees - improve court and private practice case management, reduce discovery costs and to equitable share litigation costs. Presenters: Jennifer Oswald Brown, Erin Mayfield Craig, Stacy Wullschleger or Nicole Fisher, and Judges Kimminau, Sherill Rosen and Foth.

Civility/Professionalism/Bench-Bar Relations - civility, professionalism, self-care (burnout and vicarious trauma), eliminate bias and ways to improve the relationship and communication between the bench and bar. Presenters: Scott Mann, Erin Bajackson, Hugh O’Donnell and Judge Montgomery & Judge Weir.

Presentation: 21st century procedural justice and family law. Hon. Steve Leben, Kansas Court of Appeals.
